Preparing for Winter Weather and Strong Storms | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

11/17/2023 (Permalink)

snowy highway with vehicles driving in a squall The winter season is almost upon us! SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte has your back with these helpful tips.

The cold winter nights and cloudy days are coming fast, there’s no denying that. While we don’t experience extreme winter conditions like in some parts of the country, the Charlotte area does see its fair share of winter weather in its own way.

Rain, sleet, ice and the occasional snowstorm can create dangerous conditions really fast, so knowing what to do before, during and after a winter storm can help you avoid more serious damage around your home and property.

Tips for Preparing at Home

We always recommend laying low and avoiding travel when the weather is less than ideal. Even simple rainstorms can become dangerous if the temperature is hovering right around freezing, and slick roadways can cause serious accidents.

Instead, stay home and get your emergency supplies ready. Find your weather radio and tune into the local forecast. Strong wind and other winter weather can knock out power for an unpredictable amount of time, so knowing what to expect and preparing for the unexpected is always a good idea.

Find your extra flashlights and batteries, your first-aid kit, and some safe drinking water. You should also have a reliable way to stay warm in case we do lose power for a while. Extra blankets or your fireplace can all be reliable options.

That said, you should also have a backup location that you can travel to if your home becomes too cold to stay in. Make arrangements with a family member or friend or understand where the local warming centers are just in case.

Cleaning Up After the Storm Passes

Use caution when moving around after the storm passes. We all know that the weather can be unpredictable, and it could easily start to rain, sleet or snow at any time. Take note of any damage and start cleaning up your home.

If we get a lot of snow, you should take the time to get it off the edges of your roof. Since it doesn’t get extremely cold here, any snow that does fall tends to be really wet and heavy, and that weight can build up and cause structural damage to your roof and gutters.

Storms that produce a lot of wind and rain can also be problematic. If the temperature is close to freezing and rain is tossed onto the sides of your home, it could freeze around things like vents and ductwork and cause dangerous blockages. Check these areas right away, and chip away any ice buildup.
