Prepare Your Home for When the Wind Blows | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

6/5/2023 (Permalink)

Dense forest area with trees bending due to intense wind and rain If you've suffered from storm-related damage to your home or business, make SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte your first call.

Wind is a major factor when it comes to the impact of a storm system. A gentle breeze during a soft rain won’t have much impact, but when strong winds accompany a dangerous summer storm, it can be troublesome for you and your home.

Strong wind can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. While severe weather is usually where wind does the most damage, dangerous wind can happen even on the sunniest of days.

By understanding more about different kinds of wind and how to prepare your home for its impact, you can avoid home damage as much as possible.

<h3wind">Understanding Wind

The majority of reported damaging wind is associated with thunderstorms and certainly during tornadoes. Tornadoes can produce some of the strongest and most damage-causing wind.

A typical thunderstorm can have wind in varying degrees from a couple miles an hour up to 60 miles per hour. When it blows that hard, it can easily toss around debris outside.

Straight-line winds go one step further. This type of wind encompasses any wind that doesn’t have rotation in it. This kind of wind blows up to 100 miles per hour, which can cause widespread damage.

Whenever a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter right away. The wind in a tornado can come in a variety of forms. Straight-line winds, downdrafts and microbursts are all possibilities, and each can cause total devastation.

We are no strangers to wind damage here in the Charlotte area! We experience a wide variety of wind patterns and strong storms throughout the spring and summer. Even just recently we had a strong system come through and damage properties.

Prepare your home for the potential for wind damage as soon as a wind advisory or weather alert is issued. You might not have a lot of time to do so, but you might be able to prevent debris from flying into your house or experiencing severe damage to your car or siding.

Secure or tie down anything loose around your property like propane tanks, lawn furniture or children’s toys, and consider pulling your car into the garage if possible. You should also pick up branches or other yard debris.

Once your home is secure and ready to go, get your family indoors and away from the windows. A single flying object can easily break glass and injure you.

Only leave your sheltering location once you are confident that the storm has passed. Take a walk around your property to look for storm damage and take pictures as you go. Don’t forget your roof! Even just a single broken or missing shingle can leak water into your home. If you do discover damage, call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte for a quick and efficient recovery.
